The Global Warming “Solutions” Act Will Worsen Climate Impacts on Vermont

How could a bill with such a great name be so destructive?

Because it gives emissions reduction priority over other aspects of climate action—like environmental protection. Developers will use this law to justify energy projects that degrade the natural resources that mitigate climate impacts on Vermont.

An unintended consequence of a similar law in Massachusetts is the destruction of Maine wildlife habitat. That is because in order to meet its emissions targets, Massachusetts will buy more electricity from Hydro Quebec. That is requiring the construction of a new transmission line through Maine. The net effect of Massachusetts’ law is a worsening of climate impacts.

Is that what we want for Vermont?
