Human Activity Places One Million Species at Risk

A United Nations panel warns that human activity may cause the extinction of one million plant and animal species.

A summary of the 1,500-page report by an international panel of experts was released on May 6, 2019. It describes a catastrophic loss of biodiversity resulting from human-caused environmental degradation.

Two of the prime causes are climate change—which requires migration and adaptation to new conditions—and destruction of habitat—which blocks migration paths and inhibits adaptation.
