College to host solar tours

NORTHFIELD — The Vermont chapter of the American Institute of Architects, in cooperation with Efficiency Vermont, is offering tours of “solar decathlon” houses and biomass plants July 25 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Middlebury College and from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Norwich University.

With an up-close examination of these sustainable, state-of-the-art structures, participants will have the opportunity to learn from building professionals and student leaders about energy and the environment as these relate to construction choices.

Attendees will learn about the critical energy, appliance, heating and ventilating, and material choices students made during the design and construction processes.

Middlebury’s “Self-Reliance House,” which came in fourth overall for livability and sustainability in 2011’s DOE competition, will be part of the morning tour.

Architects, engineers, building professionals and the public are welcome. Continuing education credits are available. For registrants paying in advance, fees are $25 for a half day or $45 for the full day. For those paying on site, fees are $30 for a half day or $50 for the full day.

Checks, payable to AIAVT, should be mailed to 88 Blackbird Lane, Charlotte, VT 05445. More details are available through AIA by calling 425-6162, emailing or visiting
